Protecting children from location based services

Some mobile phone services need information about the location of a person's phone in order for them to work. It means that a third party may be able to find out the whereabouts of a phone and, potentially, its owner.

Before your child uses a mobile phone, you should check the location based settings of the phone. To do this, dial 1300 and select from a menu of four different privacy settings. To have maximum privacy for your child, select option 4. You can then check and change this setting as often as you like.

Please note that it is not possible to turn off the phone location which is provided to the emergency services. It is best to register your phone with customer service so we can pass your address details to the emergency authority in the event of an emergency call not being completed.

You should always check the location based settings before your child uses a phone. It doesn't matter if the phone is new or second-hand.

Safety in numbers

We've made a handy little card with all the vital numbers for our child protection services on it - so you'll be able to remember 'safety in numbers' wherever you go. We're giving the cards out in store to parents, teachers and anyone else who looks after children, but you can download a digital version here.
